Self-HELP Me: Change your Habits, Change your Life

For me personally it was in 1974 when I realized the enormous power I had over my own life and destiny while reading Viktor Frankl’s Man’s Search for Meaning where this concentration camp survivor states "Everything can be taken from a man but ...the last of the human freedoms - to choose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one's own way.” And the immortal book As a Man Thinketh by James Allan where he explains, "A man is literally what he thinks about, his character being the complete sum of all his thoughts. He thinks in secret, and it comes to pass: Environment is but his looking-glass."

Knowledge isn’t Power... Only the consistent application of knowledge creates power.

GOING... Going... gone...

Journey forward to today and ask yourself what of that dream has become a reality? How many of these brilliant insights are now an automatic part of your basic nature? Are you consistently applying them and getting the results you expected, or have they gradually faded away? Have you ever allowed an empowering principle or passionate goal to slip through your fingers, unexpressed... never fully realized? What then is the missing link to LASTING change?

The Mystery of Mastery
Have you ever observed a true master in any area of life and wondered, "What do they have that I haven’t? What’s the difference between them and me?" I call this the "mystery of mastery. I’ve spent much of my own life studying these masters although this one brief article can’t possibly cover all the insights I offer in my Self-HELP Me! book or webinars, I will share one of the single most important steps you can take right NOW to help you master any character trait, state of mind, system, skill or behavior you choose.


Speaking of masters; if you are already a master or renowned authority in your field, then you realize the powerful role that habits, support team and systems play in changing lives and bringing about desired results.

Not yet a master? It’s time to take control of your destiny: no more hoping knowledge will generate spontaneous results on its own, no more waiting for your dreams to come true. Become a Habit Master. Habits, as you will ultimately discover, are far more powerful than even hope.

Changing the way we see things allows us to change how we feel, which alters how we behave, which changes our course of action and ultimately redefines our destiny.

But remember: changing our thoughts still won’t bring about consistent results if we don’t consistently apply our new thoughts, no matter how motivated we might be in the beginning. This is where habits come in, because habits cause us to consistently apply what we’ve learned, and thus consistently produce the results we’re looking for.

By definition, ‘self-help’ means ‘self-guided’ and its primary function is to change the way we see things, unfortunately, the personal growth industry has been far, far less effective at changing our habits than it has been at changing our minds. This little detail plays a critical factor in the effectiveness and success of books and other programs designed to help you realize your goals.

The Missing Link

The missing link is this: if we want to permanently and significantly change our lives we must first change our basic nature (our habits); if we want to lose weight and keep it off or climb the ladder of success and stay there or greatly improve our relationships, we must alter the part of our nature that controls that part of our life.

It really isn’t ‘SELF-help’!
Changing our basic nature is tough! It takes sustained effort and commitment to get lasting results. It generally isn’t human nature to sustain our efforts and commitments, at least not long enough to alter our nature or form new habits. Consequently, we need help—and self-help—if we want to ensure results.
