Have you ever experienced an inspiring book, CD, seminar or movie with a message so profound or stirring that you vowed to make a sweeping or significant change in your life?Try mentally returning to that period now… bringing to mind the feelings of hope, excitement and possibilities. Can you hear the music climaxing in ‘Rocky’ as Stallone sprints to the top of those endless stairs, leaping into the air with his fist... or perhaps it happened while listening to Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective People or during a Chicken Soup for the Soul story.
For me, it happened in 1974 when I realized the enormous power I had over my own life and destiny while reading Viktor Frankl’s Man’s Search for Meaning, where a concentration camp survivor states "Everything can be taken from a man but the last of the human freedoms: to choose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one's own way."Also as I read the immortal book As a Man Thinketh... by James Allan where he explains, "A man is literally what he thinks about, his character being the complete sum of all his thoughts. [...] He thinks in secret, and it comes to pass: Environment is but his looking-glass." If you can recall a time like this when you experienced a new purpose or level of awareness, please do so now.
Next, journey forward to this day and ask yourself what of that dream has become a reality? How many of these brilliant insights are now an automatic part of your basic nature? Are you consistently applying what you learned and getting the results you expected, or has the learning experience gradually faded away? Have you ever allowed an empowering principle or passionate goal to slip through your fingers, unexpressed ... never fully realized?
GOING... Going... gone...
__________________________________________________________Have you ever observed a true master in any area of life and wondered "What do they have that I haven’t? What do they know or do that I don’t? What’s the difference between them and me?" I call this the "mystery of mastery."
Knowledge isn’t Power...
Only the consistent application of knowledge creates power.
The Mystery of Mastery
I’ve spent much of my own life studying these masters and although this one brief article can’t possibly cover all the insights I offer in my Self-HELP Me!, in a moment I will share one of the single most important steps you can take right NOW to help you master any character trait, state of mind, system, skill or behavior you choose.
Speaking of masters; if you are already a master or renowned authority in your field, then you realize the powerful role that habits play in changing our lives and bringing about the results we desire. As for the rest of you, its time to take control of your destiny; no more hoping knowledge will generate spontaneous results on its own and no more waiting for your dreams to come true... for you’re becoming a habit Master, and habits as you will ultimately discover, are far more powerful than hope.
By definition, "self-help" means self-guided, and its primary function is to change the way we see things, (to change our thoughts and perceptions). Since self-help has been proven highly successful at changing our thoughts (perceptions) it can have a profound impact on changing our lives as well.Changing the way we see things allows us to change how we feel, which alters how we behave, which changes our course of action and ultimately redefines our destiny.
But remember: changing our thoughts still won’t bring about consistent results if we don’t consistently apply our new thoughts, no matter how motivated we might be in the beginning. This is where habits come in, because habits cause us to consistently apply what we’ve learned, and thus consistently produce the results we’re looking for.
Unfortunately, the personal growth industry has been far less effective at changing our habits than it has been at changing our minds. This little detail, plays a critical role in the effectiveness and success of books and other programs designed to help you realize your goals. The missing link is this: if we want to permanently and significantly change our life we must first change our basic nature (our habits); whether we want to lose that weight and keep it off or climb the ladder of success and stay there or greatly improve our skills or relationships in any area, we must alter the part of our nature that controls that part of our life.
Changing our basic nature is tough! It takes sustained effort and commitment to get lasting results. Unfortunately it isn’t human nature to sustain our efforts and commitments; at least not long enough to alter our nature or for habits to form. Consequently, we MUST have help with ‘self-help’ if we want to ensure results. And THAT is the one thing I want you to act on NOW... because you cannot do this on your own!!! So if you do nothing else, pair yourself up with one or more support partners who will agree to be there for you—supporting you, helping you reach and sustain your goals until they become a part of your nature and habits.
It really isn’t SELF-help!
"There is no such thing as a ‘self-made man’. You will reach your goals ONLY with the help of others."~George Shinn
