Networking and Lily Pads

by Mark Yarnell

It's amazing how few people truly understand exponential growth. I do my best to explain the importance of short-term resilience, but it doesn't always sink in. Last year a local farmer left his small lake to lily pads for a mere 3-week vacation without clearing a small cluster away. When he returned the lake was covered with pads and the fish were all dead. As he pointed out, they were doubling so rapidly that the last time they grew they increased from half the lake to the whole lake in one spurt. That's exponential growth.

In networking, so many people forget this strategic insight. It may seem like tiny growth is occurring when a new wave begins, but that's just the beginning. It's those who remain consistent until the "lake is full" who make the money. Let's all stay focused for a couple of years on helping others succeed in business and spreading the word about our products. Let's all stay focused for a couple of years on getting the word out to as many people as possible. It doesn't matter so much which tool you choose to deliver the message, what matters is that your group will begin growing like lily pads if you work hard enough for one straight stretch of time.

It all starts by finding one leader who goes to work. Next thing you know you have two, then four, and then eight people on your team. At the end of a year, there are 4100 or so business builders in your organization and you're off to the races. What doesn't work is stopping at sixteen people and entering the management trap.

The time is now, and many of you probably aren't earning what your family deserves. Let's all hit it hard without letting up for the next 18 - 24 months.

See you at the top!
