About four years ago, I sat in a crowded room in Malaysia. As I awaited my introduction to speak, I looked around and noticed how diverse the crowd was.

There were Sikhs with their colorful turbans, Sunnis with their veils, Indians with their bindis, and Malays, the predominant Malaysian population, with their exquisite Baju Melayus and Baju Kurungs; and me, the short, blonde, American woman.

It was quite a beautiful contrast of cultures. While we all looked very different on the outside, everyone was there for the same purpose: to create a better life.

I was struck by the energy. The room was filled with love. People were laughing, some hugging, each excited and hopeful for the day’s experience together as network marketers. Under any other circumstance, many of these people would have never been seen in the same room, let alone huggging each other. The power of our business goes way beyond providing products and services and growing a check.

We defied what seems to be far too prevalent around the world: racism, separatism, discrimination, and intolerance. In our profession, people seem to forget these invisible yet powerful borders of race, religion, color, and creed.

We have the ability to wipe away hate and replace it with love and acceptance. Our differences are a gift, as together we are stronger.

What is it about network marketing that allows these borders and walls to come down? One of the most important elements of the human spirit: the feeling of belonging.

As we bring new members into our teams, they connect with other likeminded people. They get to hear stories of success, which has them feel hopeful for their own success. They get to hear stories of failure, which allows them to relate.

Soon enough, they feel like they belong. They aren’t thinking about what the group looks like on the outside. They know they have found their “tribe.” Perhaps they have been looking their entire life to fit in, and finally they do.

Without this sense of feeling safe and understood, many would not want to be involved. As with anything, nothing is perfect. People will not always have that sense of belonging, and in turn, they will quit.

How can we ensure a sense of belonging?

We have a tremendous opportunity in network marketing to lead the way in bringing people, cultures, races, and genders together. There is something incredibly attractive about people who are in alignment. The energy and synergy created is magnetic. Imagine what a team in harmony and alignment has the potential to attract and build!

We are already on a solid path, and with continued awareness and commitment, we have the ability to be a large part of a global solution, together. It starts with each and every one of us. What role will you personally play?
