My favorite part of network marketing is the opportunity it provides for personal and professional development. One of my favorite quotes is, “Network marketing is a personal development program with a compensation plan attached.”

When I was teaching personal and leadership development in my corporate career prior to network marketing, people would attend our programs because their managers told them to. Sadly, most were not so receptive to learning. In our profession, we know working on ourselves directly affects our business results so we want to grow. What a joy to be surrounded by people who are inspired to improve themselves in a business model that supports it so beautifully.

As we continually grow, everyone in our world benefits. We become better at asking questions that allow us to truly learn what’s important to others. As we deeply listen, we feed their souls by truly caring while we find out how best to proceed with our products and/or opportunity.

Honing our asking and listening skills can benefit every aspect of our lives. As we sincerely understand people through empathic listening, they feel valued and our connections grow stronger and deeper.

Privileged to work with Stephen R. Covey and supporting the launch of his epic book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People in the late 80s, I vividly recall a profound experience where Stephen asked me a question and listened to my answer with his entire being. Although there were several hundred people around, it was as if I was the only one there. He used to say, “The deepest need of the human soul is to be appreciated, acknowledged, affirmed, and understood.”

As we learn to dig deeper and find out what people care about, they feel truly affirmed and valued. For many, it’s the first time anyone has asked them about their dreams. We give people hope for a life in alignment with their values, no matter what their past has been. We show them a life of freedom to do what we want, when we want, and with whom we want. We support people in reaching their full potential, increasing their confidence, and believing in themselves—perhaps for the first time.

Many join a company for the products or the opportunity, yet many stay for a reason way beyond either—connection to a community. The business becomes a type of family of people who truly care. It can be a deeply healing experience to have a team of people holding them accountable, celebrating successes, offering strong support in times of challenge.

In our high-tech world, our profession offers a high-touch community to belong to and a place to serve. Zig Ziglar said it best: You can get anything you want in life if you help enough people get what they want. Our world is a better place because that is the foundation of our wonderful profession.
