Kori and I met in 1982 at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. Kori majored in Fashion Buying and Merchandising, while I majored in Apparel Production Management and Global Sourcing. We have been married for thirty years.

Humor writer Dave Meurer said, “A great marriage is not when the ‘perfect couple’ comes together. It is when an imperfect couple learns to enjoy their differences.”

When you are fortunate enough to build and master a business you are both passionate about, the integrity of the business is paramount. Therefore, the areas we each operate in with a degree of ease help us identify which one of us will lead and grow the business in those areas.

We have learned to get out of each other’s way if we are not the masters of a particular area. When we are both weak in an area we choose to educate ourselves together or we hire someone who has the same vision and drive we have, but who is stronger than us to oversee that area of our business. In either case, we find accountability partners to encourage us (it could be each other).

The biggest benefit of our partnership is that we understand the business and the obstacles we encounter, which helps us celebrate with exuberance and lift up one another with compassion, as well as others on our team.

A powerful lesson we learned from ten years in business together is this: I will never be you and you will never be me. And we don’t need two of me or two of you. What you bring to the table adds more value to me (because I’m not gifted in that area) and vice versa.

We believe we are more successful together than separate. We are at peace knowing the direction in which our business is growing. Our happiness radiates out to our teams, friends, and family, because of that peace.

When we travel for business it truly seems like pleasure and we find ourselves smiling and saying, “Can you believe it? We are at work...!” That’s the way you were meant to live—enjoying what you are called and gifted to do. When you are constantly looking to help and encourage others while you help and encourage yourself, you’re not working a job, you are performing a Work.
