The lure of a home-based business is that it gives us the ability to spend our days doing what we love.

What do you love doing? What does your day look like? Looking for an answer to this question is what led me to find network marketing twenty years ago. I wanted a satisfying business on my terms—the benefits of being self-employed without the responsibilities of overhead—and I found it.

Fortunately, years before that I had also learned that to be successful in business I had to prioritize, focus, and be persistent—not just in my business but in my whole life.

One of my favorite quotes is by Robert Heinlein:

“In the absence of clearly defined goals, we become strangely loyal to performing daily trivia until ultimately we become enslaved by it.”

Home-based business owners should hang this quote above their desk. It’s so easy to get sucked into daily trivia when working from home, permitting those trivia to shift your focus and ultimately you lose the freedom and balance you were looking for in the first place.

Without prioritizing your activities and perhaps even delegating you may find that household responsibilities can easily consume your time. One of the things I encourage all new leaders to do as they start making money is to get clear on their priorities and hire the necessary support staff to assist them. This might be a student who works part time for you, or a housekeeper who comes in once or twice a week. Having assistance really helps you keep your head in the game so that you stay focused on issues important to you, your spouse, your children, and the growth of your business.

Be present. When you play, play—mentally and physically; when you work, just work—mentally and physically!

Here are some wise words I recently heard in a seminar:

You are only limited by weakness of attention and poverty of imagination. The great secret is a controlled imagination and a well sustained attention firmly and repeatedly focused on the object to be accomplished.

Powerful and true, this is what we must do each and every day. We want to build a rich image with our imagination, then focus all our attention on it until it is a physical result in every area of our life.

I learned long ago that I didn’t have to do everything. Today I only do those things I like to do. Frankly, I can’t imagine living any other way. My business provides me with the time and money freedom to spend my days doing what I love.

What do you love doing?
