“I know network marketing works—but will it really work for me?” This book is for you if you’ve ever asked that question—or have people in your network who have.

How to Sell Networking Marketing… is a fairly dense book. That’s not a criticism—the seriousness of the topic and the depth required to address it comprehensively are not suited to a lightweight format. Oliver zeroes in on the essential problem for networking believers who aren’t making money; he aims to help them fundamentally change the way they think about and approach networking.

Oliver focuses on what he calls (and has trademarked) “Natural Selling,” which means basically “what works for you”; he is solidly in the one-size-does-not-fit-all camp. His emphasis is on the conversations and interactions you have with others, particularly on asking questions, listening, and creating successful dialogue. The book is organized around four “Principles to Eliminate the Cause of Rejection”: Helping Other People Solve Their Problems; Listening to What is Being Meant, Not Just What is Being Said; How to Ask the Right Questions at the Right Time; Feeding Back What You Think You Heard They Want. Oliver is a master of the subtle distinction, like the difference between seeing someone as a prospect or as a potential partner. “Manipulative questions,” he says, “will get the answers you want, but will they get the answers you need?” Each section asks you to reevaluate how you’ve been trained to approach the networking process and offers you alternatives to try on for size.

The book combines the sort of gems you’ll copy down and post over your desk with specific and detailed instructions. Concepts that will strike even the most well-read networkers as fresh include: the Conversational Road Map; a method for guiding productive dialogue; the Three Logical Conclusions, which serve to clarify where you stand in a conversation and how best to proceed; and Solution Questions, an excellent tool for opening minds and creating a sturdy bridge to the next step. Worried about approaching your warm market? It’s you, Oliver asserts, who knows best what’s right for a given relationship, and he illustrates ways to introduce the business appropriately. He points out, “You don’t need closing techniques for someone who wants to make a change,” and How to Sell Network Marketing… will assist you in learning how to identify and converse successfully with that person in the crowd.
