The most frequently asked questions I get about social media have to do with blogging. People constantly ask me questions about what they should be blogging about and almost everyone wants to know when it's the right time to start blogging.

The answer to that second question is very easy to answer: right now.

A great real-world example of the benefits of starting your blog where ever you are can be seen in the movie Julie & Julia, which recounts the real-life story of Julia Child and Julie Powell.

Julia Child wasn't always the famous culinary icon, as we see her living in France and attempting to gain entrance into a cooking school as a simple outlet for her love of food and eating it. She faces discouragement as one of the school heads tells her that "she doesn't have what it takes to ever be a chef."

Julie Powell sets out to cook all 524 recipes from Julia Child's cookbook in 365 days in her tiny apartment kitchen. Like Julia before her, Julie is not a master chef at the start of her project. Starting on page 1, every day she cooks a dish and writes about the experience in her blog. In the beginning, only her mother is reading. Later, people from around the world are awaiting her posts.

This true story is just one of many examples of where starting at zero builds real authenticity and credibility—something many of the "big names" lack in their blogs.

In today's online media world, a blog is essential in order to create a connection with your prospects and business partners. Whether your contacts are down the street or on the other side of the planet, your blog content will give them another way to get to know, like and trust you.

Creating a blog has never been easier. Free services such as wordpress.com, blogger.com, tumblr.com or posterous.com provide all you need to create an easy-to-use platform from which your voice can be heard.

How much should you write? Some of the most popular blogs have posts of barely 250 words each. Other posts might be 1,000 words or more. What's more important than length with your blog is consistency and authenticity.

Be yourself in your blog. Even Superman has bad days. Don't turn your blog into a journal of doom and gloom, but take an event and turn it into a lesson others can relate to. Put yourself in your blog and you'll attract more followers, more people sharing your posts through social media and more connections from potential partners who want to work with you.
